9' #5 Weight Shootout PDF Print E-mail

Sage z-axis, zxl, vangtage and Orvis Helios*I've been using a 4 weight rod for the waters I fish for the last several years and lately I've been feeling a little under gunned.  Most of the trout I am landing are in the 10" to 15" range, but I've been landing some pigs that are pushing 20" and I know there are even larger to be found.  For dry flies and nymphing, my 4 weight has worked, but it is not the most fun.  When I want to strip streamers, I've gone to my 6 weight.  Well, I decided it was time to find an all purpose #5 weight rod to do it all.  This is going to be my new rod that I will fish 90% of the time.  I decided to head to Bob Marriotts Fly Fishing Store to compare the Sage Z-Axis to the Sage ZXL.  First off, if you are in Southern California and you are looking for fly fishing gear or information about anything fly fishing, I have yet to find a store that matches Bob Marriotts in customer service.  I can't recommend them enough.  While I was there I also added an Orvis Helios to the mix as well as Sage's budget rod, the Vantage.  All Rods were #5 weight 9 foot rods.

Up The 395: August At The East Walker PDF Print E-mail

Near The Lower Owens In AugustWell, I hadn't been up the 395 in a long time.  In fact, it had probably been 15 years since I had let that much time go between visits.  My Trip to Montana with my father just whetted my appetite for trophy trout so I set aside two long weekends in August to spend on the East Walker.  Since it had been so long since I'd taken that drive, my new favorite fly shop hadn't opened yet.  The Sierra Trout Magnet Fly Shop in Bishop is now one of my stops every time I pass through Bishop.

Rick Reed Guides My Dad on The Madison RiverWell, it has been a while since I last added to the blog.  For nearly a year fishing has had to take a back seat to everything else going on.  Last week was a special reminder of how much I love fly fishing.  My Dad and I took a few days to travel to Montana and hit some of their blue ribbon waters.  This time of year is spectacular.  I understand the crowds can be pretty ugly too, but our guide showed us some beautiful water that didn't have many folks at all.  Rick Reed showed us a great time on the Upper Madison and the Yellowstone Rivers.

The Hatch 2 Fly Fishing App For iphone PDF Print E-mail

The Hatch Fly Fishing AppI love my iphone and I've been waiting for a fly fishing app for some time.  I always imagined the first fly fishing app would be a game that would compete with the other fishing games.  Maybe you've played them.  If you use a spinning rod or chuck bait those games just might help you pass the time.  I was bored by them very quickly and had hoped someone might dream up an app that might cater to my fly fishing desires.  Cory Pratt and Brisk Studios have come up with a much more functional fly fishing app that has potential for all of us techie fly slingers.

My Broken Bamboo Fly RodSo, in the two weeks since I had visited the East Walker River and the Golden Trout Wilderness, I purchased a bamboo fly rod and tied a couple dozen flies.  The phenomenon of having an amazing time fishing combined with having my business pretty much crawl to a stop lead me to another necessary weekend of fly fishing.  In fact, I decided to just cut and paste my most recent itinerary and try for a repeat performance.  Well, here's the good, the bad, and the ugly.
