A Los Angeles Trophy Trout
Well, they may not be trophy trout, but literally minutes from the urban sprawl that is Los Angeles there is some amazing scenery and some beautiful fish.  It was November the last time I got to do any fly fishing and my soul was aching.  The fly fishing casting clinic I attended over the last several weekends just helped add to the longing.   I talked to some folks with the same fly fishing addiction as me and decided I needed to grab my gear and hit some local water.

There was some hiking involved, some bush whacking (poison oak avoiding) and some boulder hopping.  My butt got kicked.  However, for the first time in weeks I slept like a baby and woke up smiling.

If you live near blue ribbon water I think you start to get spoiled and take for granted the blessings of good fishing.  I know we here in Southern California have a tendency to take our fine weather for granted.
Urban Fly Fishing Paradise - A Dink Trout Stream
I only live a few blocks from the ocean, but I'd rather drive the 4 hours to the Lower Owens River to find a consistent source of Browns and Rainbows over 12 inches.  I used to hit some of the more popular local spots for little dinks, but often times they can be crowded and sometimes a little dangerous.  The West Fork of the San Gabriel River is a popular spot for local fly fishing, but you have to put up with the possibility of having your car broken into and dealing with the unbelievable amount of trash that is stream side near the parking area.  Another well known place to fly fish in the Los Angeles area is Piru Creek.  I met a group of non english speaking poachers there a few years back.  I tried to extol the virtues of catch and release to them.  Thankfully, I had my bike.  The looks on their faces is why I haven't been back since.

Sometimes, you have to get creative.  I'm glad I put out the effort.  The scenery was amazing, the trout were opportunistic (I was casting parachute Adams flies all day) and I only saw 2 other people fishing.

I love this town.

There must be a reason that you insist on sharing the location of local water
with millions? My friend, it isn't necessary to drop names...general locations
suffice. We all know where you are talking about. I am disappointed. Ruined
an otherwise outstanding read

I don't think talking about either of the streams mentioned constitutes hot
spotting. Both spots are already out there on the internet or in books or
magazines literally hundreds of thousands of times. Now, if you mention XXXX
Creek or YYYY Creek, then I get ticked off.
