I can go 5 weeks, maybe 6 at the most, without fly fishing if I've set up my fly bench at home. Last week I cleaned everything up and cleared it all away after several weeks of fly tying. With a few dozen gorgeous new flies, I knew I had to hit the road. Since fishing season has officially started in The Golden Trout Wilderness, and I had never been there, I wanted to explore a little and see what these Trout look like up close and personal. But, I also wanted to catch some bigger trout too.

I've been fiercely hitting my fly bench for the last couple of weeks and I have been dreaming of all the monster trout I'd land with all my beautiful new flies. I thought that I'd get away last weekend to do some fly fishing in the mountains, but insead I hit the surf in search of Corbina and had a blast landing some Surfperch.

What??? Free Flies??? Yup, you read it right. We've had our forum up and running for a few months now, but we really haven't done our best to bring it to life. Some of you have already left comments and asked questions and that is much appreciated. We'd love to here from you more often so, here's the deal. We are going to reward our most active Forum user for the month of July with a dozen hand picked and hand tied flies that I will personally tie at my fly tying bench. The lucky winner will have a nice selection of my favorite flies that I use and that have been talked about here at DS Fly Fishing. We look forward to hearing from you (no spam please.)

I am constantly looking for ways to minimize what I carry on the water. By nature, I lack the organizational skills that I envy in my friends who have garages tidier than my kitchen. So, I'm always trying to follow their lead to insure that by the end of a long day of wading I'm not exhausted from carrying fifty pounds of gear with me while I'm fly fishing. I swapped out my fly fishing vest for a functional and ergonomic chest pack awhile back and I couldn't be happier.

I'm a thinker. That's why I decided to make the long drive to the East Walker River the weekend after Memorial Day Weekend. I calculated the crowds would be gone and the trout would be jumping. Note to self: check the weather report before all fly fishing adventures.
