If you're from Los Angeles, particularly near the coast, you are familiar with our June gloom. This coastal fog has been mysteriously absent for the past few years, but it is back this year with a vengence. It seems strange that our sweltering summer temperatures didn't show up until after the fourth of July. Well, now the heat is on. I really thought I'd be able to get away last weekend, but I just wasn't feeling it. For me, nothing comes close to wet wading in warm temps for trout.
Thankfully, my buddy hit me up for a little wet wading in the surf instead. We went up to La Conchita, just north of Ventura, and started slinging Perch Candy at about 4:30 pm. It's all about the tides. Even though we got a late start, sunset wasn't until 8:30 so we had a few hours of pristine summer sunshine and some pretty fish.
If you've done any fly fishing in the surf in Ventura or La Conchita you know that the off shore kelp beds can make experience frustrating if the surf is littered with "Salad." We spent much of our time trying to find a stretch of shoreline without seaweed. We spent another chunk of time cleaning the seaweed off of our flies between casts. We finally had a nice stretch of beach that had some nice troughs going on. We never came across any Corbina, but we both landed some nice surfperch.
I'll take wet wading in a mountain stream over the ocean anytime - hey I grew up near the ocean so I'm over it. But, it's still nice to be able to pull fish out of the pacific on a fly. The sunset was pretty spectacular. Man, I love LA.

I've been fiercely hitting my fly bench for the last couple of weeks and I have been dreaming of all the monster trout I'd land with all my beautiful new flies. I thought that I'd get away last weekend to do some fly fishing in the mountains, but insead I hit the surf in search of Corbina and had a blast landing some Surfperch.
We had stopped at L&L Hawaiian BBQ in Ventura to pick up some grub for after the fishing. Mmmmm. Pulled pork and short ribs - a heart attack to go! It was tastey!
