Economic Lemons Make Fly Tying Lemonade PDF Print E-mail

Fabric Store Tying Thread

If you read my previous post you know that my Grandfather just celebrated his 98th birthday.  What I didn't share was the ride to and from the happy celebration.  I ride a motorcycle (as often as I can).  Since I have the good fortune of living in Southern California, I get a lot more winter riding days in than most of the country.  Well, after a couple days of much needed rain, I took advantage of a bright, cloudless day to ride out for my visit to the family.  On the way there I noticed a fabric store going out of business.

The one and only time I had been in a fabric store before I tied my own flies was an excruciating hour with my gal a few years back.  I grumbled loud and long enough that my gal never invited me to go back.  But, now I am a fly fisherman who ties his own flies.  Now, fabric stores are a little slice of heaven, especially the ones with big yellow signs that say things like "Going Out Of Business Sale", "Liquidation Sale", "Everything Must Go", and my personal favorite, "At Least 50% Off Of Everything".  I knew where I'd be stopping on the way back.

Believe me, I'm not happy to see another business shut it's doors.   There is nothing I'd like more than to be able to hop into the "Way-Back" machine and visit a time of economic boom from our past so I can remember what it was like to watch the news and be afraid of everything else but the economy.  As a wise man once suggested, if life gives you lemons, then you've got something to chuck at cars (if you don't enjoy lemonade).

If you met me, you wouldn't think me to be the poster boy for Hell's Angels.  Nonetheless, when I have my boots and leather jacket on, with my helmet in hand, I feel like people give me a wide berth (I'm sure it has more to do with people trying to figure out why I'm wearing the motorcycle costume and holding a helmet than any sort of motorcycle dude intimidation).

Fabric Store Wet Fly

In the fabric store, however, I am the only man... and I'm in motorcycle gear... and I am on a mission to find a deal on anything I can use on my fly tying bench.  The place was picked over pretty well.  But, I did come away with a couple of 250 yard spools of metallic thread.  I can't wait to fish the wet fly I tied with the green thread.

So, keep fishing... for bargains.  In times like these, bargains are there to be found.  The best thing you can do to stimulate our economy is spend your hard earned money on these bargains.  Then go fishing... for fish.
