Two Bug Doug - Guide and Trout Master

The next morning I made my way to a spot farther north that a guide had showed my buddy and I the previous winter.  It was a cold morning, so I knew I could take my time getting there.  I figured I'd be early, but not too early, and I'd get the prime hole there.  Well, I pulled up and who do I see fishing that hole?  None other than the guide I just mentioned.  It happened to be a day off for him and he had the same thing in mind as me.  Now, I will say right now, if you ever make your way to the Eastern Sierras and are looking for a guide, Two Bug Doug is the man.  He knows the waters in this area better than anyone I've met.  Also, he's a really nice guy to fish with.   While we were chatting he told me to toss a line in the hole - The one I had come to fish - The one he had pulled the biggest fish I saw all weekend out of.  Now that is cool.  Check out the picture.  He guides with Sierra Drifters out of Mammoth Lakes.

I was tossing really tiny midges the whole weekend, size 18-22.  This fishing was slower than I had hoped.  That is, until I hit the afternoon hatches.  I did okay from 10-12, but from 1 o'clock on, it was amazing.  I had switched to dry flies and it was a blast.  I was alternating from my size 20 parachute adams to a griffith's gnat variation I tie.  I use olive thread for the body and palmer a blue dun hackle just like the gnat.  The sun was facing me and the glare on the surface helped me see that little fly drop onto the water like a butterfly with sore feet (thanks for that one Fill).  Then with a perfect drift into this little back eddy... WHAM!  This was a nice hole that I worked for a couple hours.   Some trout would just sip it, but some would porpoise up and take the fly going down, and others would just launch straight up like Jaws.  Rainbows and Browns both were fooled.

Going Home - So Long Trout

The crowds I was worried about running into never materialized, but the fish did.  I'm still smiling.  When I got home late Sunday night, I found a fridge full of Thanksgiving leftovers and an email saying I was first in my football pool.  I love this country.
