Me And My Dad Hit Montana PDF Print E-mail

Rick Reed Guides My Dad on The Madison RiverWell, it has been a while since I last added to the blog.  For nearly a year fishing has had to take a back seat to everything else going on.  Last week was a special reminder of how much I love fly fishing.  My Dad and I took a few days to travel to Montana and hit some of their blue ribbon waters.  This time of year is spectacular.  I understand the crowds can be pretty ugly too, but our guide showed us some beautiful water that didn't have many folks at all.  Rick Reed showed us a great time on the Upper Madison and the Yellowstone Rivers.

One of the mistakes that a lot of anglers make is traveling to a river that they don't know and trying to figure it out themselves.  It is true that experience can help you read the water, but that may do you no good at all if your working a part of the river that just doesn't carry as many fish. A Nice Brown on The Madison River A good guide will help you get to where the fish are and show you how to get them.  Just going into a fly shop and buying the flies they suggest is a lot cheaper, but often wont lead to the best fishing experience.

My folks stayed at Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky a few years ago and Rick, who guides out of there,  took him for a day on the water then.  So, when we came back to Big Sky my Dad wanted Rick to take us out again.  Now my Dad is an old school bait chucker.  The technique of fly fishing is still pretty challenging to him.  Rick did a great job helping him throughout the day.  Really, it allowed my to spend more time fishing - Thanks Rick.

Thunderstorm on the Madison RiverI could go on and on about the fish and the scenery, but really, the time spent was what made it so great.  I can't remember spending that kind of time with my Dad doing something I love.

When we were on the Madison we got hit by some pretty nice thunderstorms.  The lightening was close.  Then it started raining.  Then it started hailing.  Then it started really coming down.  Thanks to our guide we had all the gear to keep us dry (mostly).   I remember thinking I hoped my Dad was OK.  He turned around and asked me if I was having fun.  Dad, you have no idea.

So, If you find yourself flying into Bozeman for some fishing, give rick a shout.  He'll take good care of you.  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
