On Friday I wanted to check out some water in the Santa Monica Mountains that was rumored to have some trout. Spring is here and I'm in fly fishing mode. I had a little time so, with my fly rod in hand, I tried a couple access points. I grew up in the area so I knew exactly where I was going. Well, a lot has changed since I was a kid. I was stymied in both locations that I had planned on.
I stopped by the ranger kiosk at the entrance to one of the state parks to see if I might get some more information. First off, park rangers have changed. There were three manning (that may be the wrong word) this particular station. All three were beautiful women under the age of 25. I love the outdoors. After I stammered my desire (for fish) they were able to tell me absolutely nothing. I told them where I was trying to go and they let me know it was hard to get to. I said I understood that, and asked how to get there. They said I'd have to hike in. I said that I had figured on that and I was looking for something more specific. They said again that it was hard to get to. To avoid showing off my adept skills at sarcasm, I politely thanked them and decided to do more research on my own. I have found another access point and I will update later.
![]() So now the weekend is in full swing and I need to go fly fishing. I decided to go back to where I had caught all those dinks last weekend. This time I brought my bike. I wanted to try another access point. But first I needed to stop at the Orvis store. I have a piece of equipment that I had dropped and it just hasn't been the same. I've never been to the Orvis store since its just a little out of the way, but it was on the way to my little fly fishing stream. The store was much smaller than I expected but I still had fun checking out the fly fishing section. The staff there was absolutely wonderful. Jacob is the person who helped resolve my issue. I have to say, he went above and beyond the call of duty to help me out. There are folks that have issue with Orvis and others like them because they fall into the evil category of corporate fly fishing. The customer service was so outstanding that I'm going to have to defend them. Thanks Orvis and thanks Jacob.
So now I head to the trail head and I realize I can't see the tops of the mountains anymore. It seems that a Squall had moved its way in. Well, you gotta fish, right? I put on my rain gear because It had started to rain. Then I hopped on the bike and started down the hill. The wind was blowing so hard that I had to work to get down hill. At the bottom of the hill it was storming so hard that I decided I needed to stop fooling myself. I was going to have to go fly fishing next weekend. I turned around and looked at the steep incline I had to look forward too. The tailwind I had was so strong I swear it blew me up that hill. It sucks, but it was the right decision. I couldn't post this without some fish porn, so the shot of that beauty is from last week (hey, I could have lied).
