In fly fishing there are many classics. In truth, there are very few flies that have not undergone some changes over the years. The original Hares Ear fly, like most original fly fishing flies, was a wet fly pattern. Today, this nymph is one of the most common and most effective flies in fly fishing for trout. |

The black ant fly is one of my favorite terrestrial patterns in fly fishing, partly because of how easy it is to tie, but also because trout eagerly gobble these flies up - see the section on trout diet. They should be fished in the surface film or just below the surface, so if you use any floatant, keep it sparse. The banks are the best place to cast this fly to since most ants find there way into the water at that point. |

So fly fishing wasn't enough, now you've decided that you are going to tie your own flies too. Maybe you've even picked up some of the basic tools so you could get started. I remember looking at all of the fly tying tools and materials that I had spent my good money on and wondered, "where do I start?"

If you go fly fishing, you should always have a selection of scuds in your fly box. In just about every trout water where you find underwater weed beds, these crustaceans will be present. Trout will always go for the protein packed scud snack when they have the opportunity. Fish them near the bottom, especially in pocket waters where the turbulence can turn these bugs up. The Partridge and Green fly is a great searching, soft hackle, wet fly pattern. You can play with the body on this by using other colors; orange and yellow are also very popular. I love the green because of how effective it is in simulating a caddis pupa. Strikes from eager trout can be deadly! Fish these flies using standard wet fly techniques. Trout love them. |
