Soft hackled wet flies just look cool to me. I think in all the fly fishing and fly tying world, they are the coolest. Not only that, but they are fun flies to tie and to fish. The March Brown Spider is a great searching pattern in runs and riffles when nothing else is working and you can't find a rising trout.
Yup, sometimes that is the perfect time to pull out a wet fly like this (if not this exact fly)! Fish this just like you would any other wet fly: on the swing. Cast the fly across the stream or across and down, keep the line slack free and let the current create drag and swing the fly toward you. You can add some lift by raising your rod tip slightly then letting it drop down again. Oh yeah, hang on and get ready for savage trout strikes.
INSTRUCTIONS THE MARCH BROWN SPIDER HOOK: Tiemco 3769 / Mustad 3906 THREAD: Orange RIB: Narrow Gold Tinsel BODY: Hare's Ear HACKLE: Brown Partridge (usually the hackle length matches the hook length)
Start at the eye and wind your orange thread to above the point of the hook. Tie in the tinsel, making sure you stop before the bend in the hook. Dub on you Hare's ear. I don't like too heavy of a body on my wet flies. Leave space for the head, about 2 hook eyes. Wrap the tinsel evenly with 3 - 5 wraps. Tie it in and trim the excess. Tie in your hackle and wind it 1- 4 turns toward the hook eye depending on how thick you want your hackle. Tie off excess. Use your fingers to pull the hackle back towards the back of the hook and tie in your head. 3 - 4 wraps backwards will insure the hackle has the swept back form. Whip finish and add head cement to complete.
