New to fly fishing - Be kind! 1 Year, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
I am new to fly fishing and was wondering what is a good fly to use throughout the entire season? (if there is one)

I am still learning how to cast and would like to know what is a good all round go to fly.

thanks

Reality is there is no ONE fly to use for the whole year. What lives and or hatches in a stream can change from week to week. But if you can have only one fly then it would probably be a Black and Olive Wooley Bugger.
As for fly casting, you can just go outside and work on your casts in your lawn or in a park. Watch some videos online and then go out and try to imitate it. Also look online for the closest fly fishing club around you. I just joined one and within the first couple of weeks I have taken an entomology class and a casting class. Both of them were only 5 bucks a piece for some excellent instruction. Great to have someone tell you what you are and are not doing right.

Thanks for the info.

I liked the idea of joining a club. I will have to look into that option.

I do keep reading about "matching the hatch" which makes sense.

What ever is available is probably what the trout are going to be eating.

thanks again

I agree with Tree Catcher - The Wooley bugger will get you into fish, and often bigger ones. Keep in mind though that this kind of fishing is usually referred to as "Stripping Streamers" and lacks much of the finesse and technique required in dry fly and nymph fishing.

For my money, a black Tiger/Zebra midge is pretty effective in most places all year round. Midges are usually hatching on streams and lakes most of the time, particularly here in the West.
