Anybody have any thoughts on the length of a fly rod?

Whats the proper length?

The length of any rod varies greatly so there is no correct answer for you. Smaller rods in a 3 weight or smaller usually run 6 feet to 7.5 feet roughly. 4 to 7 weight rods are usually between 7.5 to 9 feet long, but can run longer. 8 weights and above are usually 9 feet or longer, but can be found in the 7.5-9 foot range as well.

Bamboo tends to run shorter than contemporary graphite rods in my experience. Longer rods allow you to cast further in windy conditions, but can be frustrating on smaller water where your backcast needs to be cut short because of extreme foliage.

The real question for you is what kind of fishing do you plan on doing?
