Product Review:  Simms Windstopper Softshell Jacket

Made by:  Simms

Simms Windstopper Softshell JacketI recently purchased my Simms Windstopper Jacket and right out of the box I fell in love.  First off, I was expecting a much heavier jacket.  To my pleasant surprise it was very light weight.  Now, it is not as light as my packable rain jacket, but it is not as heavy as some of the heavy weight windstopper fleece jackets out there.  I really wanted something that I can layer and also help with some light rain and stream side dampness.  This really fits the bill.  It's been raining for four days straight here and I've been wearing it everyday to see how it fares.  I am dry and smiling.

Product Review:  Venture Fly Reels

G. Loomis Venture Reel - Inexpensive but not cheap. These days, everyone is trying to maximize their dollar.  As I've mentioned in other articles, it has been a hard life lesson to learn "You Get What You Pay For."  Now, I still look for a deal, but  the quality of the product is just as important as the bottom line purchase price.  In fly fishing, faulty equipment equals lost fish.  The larger the fish, the more critical your fly reel is for the task.  At $100, the Venture fly reel by G. Loomis is the perfect reel for the budget minded angler.  It is inexpensive, but not cheap.

Tie-Fast Fishing Knot Tying Tool
I recently attended the Fly Fishing Expo as it made its way to my neck of the woods.  One of the exhibitors there was Tie-Fast.  Now I've seen this tool for years.  I've noticed it from the corner of my eye on shelves and racks in fly fishing shops and larger retailers and always ignored it.  I just assumed it was another one of those gadgets that maybe did something cool, but certainly would only take up precious space and ultimately find itself sitting neglected and unused in the back of a drawer (No fly fishing gear will ever makes its way to the trash bin - that would be a sin).  I assumed wrong.  It was the basket of shiny tools sitting front and center that got me to approach the Tie-Fast booth at the show, otherwise I would have kept on walking.  I'm very glad I stopped.  This little tool will now sit upfront in my chest pack, never to feel unloved.

Nook Sack by Recycled Waders
My friends at Recycled Waders recently sent a little care package in the mail.  They had read my thoughts on their company in my blog post and asked that I take a first hand look at a couple of their products.  I don't think anyone would argue that the idea of recycling makes perfect sense.  Take something that is used, break it down, make a new one, rinse and repeat.   Who wouldn't want to get on board?  Especially conservation minded fly fishermen.

Regal Rotary C-Clamp Vise

Product Review:  Regal Rotary C-Clamp Vise

Made by: Regal Enterprises

So, like a good consumer, come late December I start trying to figure out what I'm going to gift to myself for weathering another holiday season.  At one point, I started thinking of replacing my fly tying vise.  You see, when winter comes, it's harder for w to get away and go fly fishing.  What I do instead is set up my fly tying station and get busy.
