Product Review:  Simms Windstopper Softshell Jacket

I recently purchased my Simms Windstopper Jacket and right out of the box I fell in love.  First off, I was expecting a much heavier jacket.  To my pleasant surprise it was very light weight.  Now, it is not as light as my packable rain jacket, but it is not as heavy as some of the heavy weight windstopper fleece jackets out there.  I really wanted something that I can layer and also help with some light rain and stream side dampness.  This really fits the bill.  It's been raining for four days straight here and I've been wearing it everyday to see how it fares.  I am dry and smiling.

Here are Simms specs on this jacket:

• This softshell blocks wind and rain while offering the pliable comfort and warmth of midweight fleece
• Soft yet rugged stretch nylon shell with soft and very warm microcheck interior
• High, fleece-lined collar for addtional protection from the elements
• Large zippered chest pockets
• Zippered, polyester mesh-lined hand warmer pockets
• Adjustable cuffs
• Adjustable shock cord hem

 It comes in the Gunmetal shown as well as black and Simms Orange/Coal.

Now, I'm 5'10" and pushing 200 lbs.  I purchased a large and found it a little loose.  This is OK by me since I'm going to be layering on the water.  I found the length about an inch too long for my arms, but with the adjustable cuffs I can tighten and forget about them.  The chest pockets have plenty of room, more than enough room for a large fly box on each side.  I love the high collar for extra wind protection.  Simms suggests it is as warm as a midweight fleece.  By itself, I found it OK for warmth in the mid 50 degree weather here, but with one extra layer I was downright toasty.  I don't think you want to swap this out for a proper water proof jacket, but I did stay dry for the small stretches I was outside in the downpour.  

The bottom line:  I love it.  This is the perfect light weight layering fly fishing jacket.  It allows for excellent mobility.  The windstopper technology is essential.  stay warm and dry on the water and you fish on the water longer.
