Product Review:  The Thingamabobber *UPDATED
Made by:  WestWater Products

Strike indicator - thingamabobberIt seems like every time I walk into a shop that sells fly fishing gear, the counter near the register is overflowing with a constantly changing selection of gadgets and knick knacks, each trying to convince me that they are the reinvention of the wheel and that they will make my fly fishing experience oh so much better.  It seems very few of these angling baubles last more than a few weeks, much less survive an entire fishing season.  Strike indicators in general seem to take up more of this space as industrious fly fisherman try and tweak and improve our glorified bobbers in the pursuit of trout.

The guy who first packaged yarn and rubber bands for strike indicatorss making a killing I bet.  Well, I usually glance at all of those new gadgets and chuckle to myself as I, instead,  buy what I'm used to.

Well, a couple months back I saw the Thingamabobber for the first time taking up that gimmick space in one of the fly fishing tackle shops I frequent.  I was intrigued.  It wasn't until I was on the water and my buddy handed me one that I realized WestWater Products might really be on to something.  I am sold.  I have moved all my old strike indicators into my old tackle box (you know the one - it's the one that stuff goes into but never comes back out).

First of all, they come in three sizes: S (1/2 in.), M (3/4 in.) and L(1 in.).  They are unbelievably easy to see and cast.  These are a breeze to throw in the wind (I know, bad joke).  They are filled with air, so they are super buoyant and don't need any floatant.  Putting them on and adjusting them is really easy, and they actually stay put.  They are also very sensitive.   I was fishing tiny midges most of my trip and these guys showed me every bump, no matter how subtle.  Quite honestly, these are the best strike indicators I have ever used and at about a buck a piece you can't go wrong.  You can check them out at RiverBum.com.  Yup, I'm a fan.  I wonder how long it will be before I try something else from the gadget counter.

* UPDATE*  So, the folks at West Water Products got in touch with me recently to let me know they've added some things to the Thingamabobber product line.  They have added a larger size for extreme fly fishing situations.  You can now find these indicators in a large 1 1/4 inch diameter.  Also, they've added two new colors:  Black for those late afternoons when the glare on the water is unavoidable and glow in the dark for... the dark.   My favorite strike indicator just got some great new options!

Interesting, verrrrry Interesting. I love those counter displays, they catch me
almost every time. My dash is full of colorful bic lighters and card decks with
funny sayings and pictures on them. Your find seems much more usefel!

Great read! I love nymphing, and I use indicator, bobber..eh.. sometimes... I
think sometime I just need to get some fish. It's not fair to the fish, I agree.
But it is fun and relax to watch the indicator float... it remind me when I was
a kid ..fishing with worms. But again, there is some moments I just don't
want anything placed between my flyline and fly.

I was hooked on the Thingamabobber too. Until I fished with a buddy several
months ago. I pulled out a Thingamabobber and looped it in. He shook his head
and said, "Balloons. 69 cents for 100." Made an instant convert out of
me! I so infrequently nymph that I imagine my last couple of Thingamaboobers
will last another couple of years though.

I rarely try new gadgets as you can tell, so I think I'll be using this for some
time. You just can't beat its function, floatation and ease of use. Thanks for
all the responses
